Older homes are often equipped with undersized or outdated panels — including recalled Federal Pacific and Zinsco panels — that can’t safely handle today’s electrical demands from EV chargers, solar systems, and modern appliances.
A professional panel change-out increases your home’s capacity, resolves safety hazards, and can be required by insurance carriers. We handle every step, from permits to final inspection.
*Final pricing varies based on panel size, meter upgrades, utility company coordination and site conditions. We'll confirm an exact quote after a free on-site evaluation.

A service panel is the one component every circuit in the house depends on. When it is undersized, full, or a brand with a known failure history, the symptoms show up everywhere else: breakers that trip under normal load, no room to add a circuit, and lights that dim when a large appliance starts. A residential panel change resolves the cause rather than chasing the symptoms one circuit at a time.

A residential panel change is a one-day job on most houses, but it is a day with the power off, so it helps to know the shape of it in advance. We pull the permit first, then coordinate the disconnect with the utility. Once the meter is pulled, the old panel comes out, the new enclosure is set, every branch circuit is re-terminated and labelled, the grounding and bonding are corrected to current code, and the inspector signs off before power is restored.
Expect to be without power for most of the working day. Plan for the refrigerator and freezer to stay shut, and if anyone in the house depends on powered medical equipment, tell us at the estimate stage so we can arrange the sequence differently. If the weather looks like rain we will reschedule rather than open a service in it.
Two things routinely surprise homeowners. The first is labelling: most older panels are labelled wrong, so part of a residential panel change is tracing circuits properly and giving you a directory that is actually accurate. The second is that the old panel location is not always the best one, and moving it a few feet can save a great deal of money on a future addition.
Service size is the decision that drives the price, so it is worth thinking past today. A 100-amp service is adequate for a small house with gas heat, gas cooking, and no electric vehicle, and there are plenty of those in Orange County still running happily. Anything with electric heating or cooling, an induction range, or a Level 2 charger has usually outgrown it.
Two hundred amps is the practical default for a family home now, and it is what we install most often as part of a residential panel change. It carries air conditioning, an EV charger, a heat pump water heater, and a kitchen remodel without another upgrade in five years. Four hundred amps belongs to large homes, properties with a detached workshop or an ADU, or houses adding two chargers plus a pool.
We size it from a real load calculation rather than a rule of thumb, which is also what the permit requires. The National Fire Protection Association has readable background on why panel and circuit condition matters if you want to understand the reasoning behind the code.
